40/10.

“40/10” emphasizes the influence that the cycles of nature, in this case, the lunar cycle, have on the internal waters of women, the creative and feminine energy, and one of the most transformative cycles, which is pregnancy and the creation of life.

Traditionally, women, through their menstrual cycle, transition through the different lunar energies (waxing, full, waning, and new). In some ancient cultures, groups of women menstruated together, synchronizing with the dark night of the new moon. During these times, they gathered in tribes to support each other on a path of deep introspection. Current times have imposed that human activity turns its back on this natural process.

This work consists of an introspective, personal, and intimate experience in which a lunar calendar synchronized with the artist’s pregnancy period is created, from the moment of conception to the moment she predicts her delivery. It encompasses the development of 273 days (40 weeks and 10 moons) in which the visibility of the moon in real-time is represented through self-portraits and abstractions of the growing belly, thus reflecting the visible side of creation. The work alludes to the different stages and phases of physical, mental, and spiritual transformation that cycles within a woman’s life entail and the forgotten connection we have regarding the alignment of humanity with the rhythms of nature.
